Privacy Policy
Black History Tribute is a free educational app made by Merrick Lee. It does not have accounts, ads, or in-app purchases. This policy explains the small amount of information the app sends off your device, why, and the choices you have.
The short version
- You never need an account, and we never ask for your name.
- Your saved stories and reading history stay on your device.
- We collect anonymous usage events to understand which features help people learn.
- If you turn on the daily reminder, we store what's needed to deliver it.
- If you send a correction, we receive what you write and, only if you choose to include it, your email.
- We don't sell your information, show ads, or track you across other apps and websites.
What we collect and why
| What | Why | When |
|---|---|---|
| Usage events, such as a story viewed, saved, shared or searched (the length of a search, not the words you type), plus the app version, device model, operating system and language | Understanding how the app is used so we can improve it | While you use the app |
| Random app identifiers created by the app. These are not your name, phone number, or Apple's advertising identifier. | Grouping usage events from the same install, and delivering reminders to the right device | While you use the app |
| Reminder settings: a push notification token, your chosen time and days, sound preference, time zone and language | Sending the daily Today in Black History reminder at the time you picked | Only if you turn on the daily reminder |
| Correction reports: the story, the type of issue, what you write, an optional source link and an optional email address | Reviewing and fixing stories, and following up with you if you asked us to | Only if you send a correction |
We do not collect your IP address for analytics, your precise or approximate location, your contacts, photos, or Apple's advertising identifier.
Who processes this information
- Amplitude stores the anonymous usage events.
- Supabase hosts the app's content, reminder settings and correction reports.
- Expo, Apple and Google deliver push notifications to your device.
These providers process information on our behalf to run the app. We don't share your information with advertisers or data brokers, and we don't sell it.
Your choices
- Reminders: turn the daily story off in the app, or turn off notifications for Black History Tribute in your device settings.
- Corrections: the email field is optional. Leave it blank and we can't contact you.
- Deleting information: email us at the address below to ask us to delete a correction report or your email address. Deleting the app removes your saved stories and history from your device.
How long we keep it
We keep correction reports for as long as we need them to review and improve stories. Reminder settings are kept while the reminder is on. Usage events are kept for 12 months and then deleted or aggregated.
Children
Black History Tribute is made for learners of all ages, including in classrooms and families. The app doesn't require any personal information to use. The only place a person can share personal information is the optional email field on a correction report. If you believe a child under 13 has sent us their email address, contact us and we'll delete it.
Security
Information is sent over encrypted connections. Reminder registrations are protected by a secret stored in your device's secure storage.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles information, we'll update this page and the effective date above.
